Through theatre, we create a community of artists, students and audiences in which each member is encouraged to grow.
Theatre Horizon was founded in 2005 by King of Prussia residents Erin Reilly and Matthew Decker and has become a lauded contributor to the arts community in Montgomery County, annually staging a 3-show season, reaching hundreds of children through drama classes, and pioneering an autism drama program that uses actors to teach socialization skills to children with autism.
Philadelphia-area premier of The Violet Hour, 2006
Since its inception, Theatre Horizon has produced critically-acclaimed productions that fulfill its mission of connecting audiences and students with professional theatre artists through relevant and compelling theatre. Critics and community have raved about Theatre Horizon’s musicals such as The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Spring Awakening, Little Shop of Horrors, Honk!, Once on This Island and You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown; they delighted in its comedies including The Very Merry Xmas Carol Holiday Adventure Show, The Compleat Works of Wllm Shkspr (Abridged) and Holiday Show with the Swing Club Band; and they were moved by its powerful dramas – Pretty Fire, How I Learned to Drive, Fat Pig, The Laramie Project and The Violet Hour. Theatre Horizon’s productions feature award winning professional actors and designers from Philadelphia and New York.
Our education department extends Theatre Horizon’s service well beyond the theatre walls. In 2006, we perceived a need in our community to support children with autism. We spent two years researching the condition and interacting closely with area families affected by autism, and discovered how theatre artists are uniquely equipped to connect with these children. We now offer theatre classes for children and young adults in our community on the autism spectrum. Through our Autism Drama Program, After School Drama Clubs, Summer Drama Camps and Acting Classes, we will reach over 650 students in 2013-14.
In 2009 Theatre Horizon put down roots in Norristown and in October 2012 we celebrated the grand opening of our new home in the heart of Norristown’s Arts Hill District. Theatre Horizon partnered with private developer 401 DeKalb Associates and the Borough of Norristown to transform sections of the former Bell Telephone building at 401 DeKalb Street into a permanent home for Theatre Horizon. The renovated building includes a welcoming first-floor lobby with flexibility to host classes and special events, office space, and a 120-seat performance venue.
Over the years, Theatre Horizon has proudly partnered with community organizations including: Greater Norristown Arts League, Laurel House, the Norristown Public Library, A Chance to Heal, the Centre Theater, 11th Hour Theatre Company, The Colonial Theatre, and Montgomery County Community College.
