Try-Out and Audition FAQ

Thank you for your interest in participating in TOWN!  Below, you will find answers to some frequently asked questions about our try-out and rehearsal processes for this exciting project.

What is TOWN?

TOWN is a brand new play with music, inspired by interviews and story circles with more than 100 Norristonians throughout 2021 and 2022.  The play is written by Michael John-Garcés, the music is written by the band ILL DOOTS, and the play will be directed by Nell Bang-Jensen, Artistic Director of Theatre Horizon on DeKalb Street in Norristown.

How do I audition?

Anyone can audition at one of the three following dates and times:

TUES, JUNE 14 – 6pm-7:30pm: MontCo-Norristown Public Library (1001 Powell St)

MON, JUNE 20 – 4pm-7pm: Theatre Horizon (401 DeKalb St — Entrance on Penn)

SAT, JUNE 25 – 1pm-4pm: Theatre Horizon (401 DeKalb St — Entrance on Penn)

You can show up to try-out on the day of your choice and we will find a ten minute slot for your audition.  Or, if you prefer to reserve your spot in advance, please email Marisol@theatrehorizon.org with your preferred date and time frame from the dates/times and locations listed above.

What will happen at auditions?

Nell (Director), Tana (Assistant Director) and one or two other members of the Theatre Horizon staff or the show’s creative team will introduce themselves. We’ll want to hear why you’re interested in being part of TOWN and what kind of role/character you might be interested in playing. We’ll have some different materials that you can choose to read aloud (a poem, or newspaper story, or part of the script). You get to decide what you want to read, and you can bring something from home if you’d like!

We will also ask you to read your selected text in a few different ways, to try out different kinds of characters!

It will save you some time at the audition if you email Marisol@theatrehorizon.org in advance to fill out the audition form ahead of time.

How many people will be cast in the play?

We are excited to have a large cast for this show!  We anticipate that there will be about 35 people in the cast, including a few full-time professional actors from the region, and performers of many different ages, identities, and amounts of performance experience.  The majority of the cast will be made up of people who live, work, or have deep relationships with Norristown.

What happens if I'm cast?

You will get an email or phone call from Nell with a role she is offering. We’ll also want to make sure you’re available for rehearsals and performances before committing. We’ll then ask you to sign a contract agreeing to your participation.

How much will I be paid?

It depends on the time commitment you’re able to make and the role you’re given. Stipends will range from $300-$1500 if you are able to make all the rehearsals and performances you are asked to attend.

When will rehearsals happen?

From July 3-August 15th, you will only be asked to come to a few rehearsals, which will be on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings or Saturday afternoons. (You can let us know if you have conflicts). Beginning August 16th, we’ll be rehearsing much more (up to 5 days a week) in the evenings and on weekends.  Rehearsals in July and early August will take place at Eisenhower Science & Leadership Academy (outside) or Theatre Horizon (inside).

“Tech rehearsals” (which is where lights, sound, and costumes are added) will happen Sept 7-Sept 14.  These rehearsals will take place outdoors on the front lawn of Eisenhower Science & Leadership Academy.

You MUST be available for all performances on September 15, 16, 17 and 18.  We also ask that you reserve the evening of Monday, September 19th as a back-up performance if shows are canceled due to rain. Performances will take place on the front lawn of Eisenhower Science & Leadership Academy.

What am I committing to?

More information about this will appear in your contract, but you are agreeing to perform in the show, make yourself available at those dates and times, communicate if any conflicts arise, and be a generous collaborator with the people you work with. You’re agreeing to follow expectations for a performer, including arriving early or on time to rehearsal, learning your lines or songs at home, taking the director’s and stage manager’s direction for your role in the show, and bringing all of your playfulness, talent, curiosity, skill, and enthusiasm to your acting, singing, and/or dancing parts in the performance.

I want to participate but I need help with transportation and/or childcare.

When you are looking at your contract, let us know of these needs and how we can help make it possible for you to participate!

Can my child be in the play?

Yes! Children ages 5 and up are welcome. We will have a “Youth Coordinator” working on the show who will be responsible for working with them and entertaining them during downtime at rehearsals.

What about Covid-19?

We will be rehearsing primarily outside to help mitigate risk. For indoor rehearsals, only vaccinated people will participate. (Unvaccinated and vaccinated people are welcome to participate in outdoor rehearsals and events). For most rehearsals, we will be masked.

What if I'm not comfortable with English?

You are still welcome to participate! There are some characters in the play who only speak Spanish and we have several Spanish-speaking creative team members who can help with communication!
