Author’s Note

It took 37 years to face my reality as an adopted Korean American. While pregnant with my daughter Parker Jean, it suddenly felt urgent to begin the process of learning, raging, healing, and laughing with all the parts of myself that had been neglected. How could I provide a home for this sweet, new soul if I don’t confront a history that had been shelved in the name of fitting in and being acceptable?

The adoptee experience is wide-ranging and hard to make sense of most days. I am sharing one single perspective. There are answers I’ve been fortunate to acquire that many members of my Korean adoptee community will never have. I know how profound that is, and I grieve with the adoptees who will never know their origins in a tangible way. I hope this show provides a lighthouse and compels them to write their stories so that we may all come to recognize that we are each others’ ancestry.

And now some statements that need to be on record: My immense gratitude to Nell Bang-Jensen, the former Artistic Director of Theatre Horizon, who called me up in January of 2023 and said, “So I was wondering if you’d be interested in acting as lead artist for a Pew Grant proposal.” I didn’t know how badly I needed to hear those words until receiving them.

The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage has given me something beyond measure: a sense of belief – an affirmation that adoption stories are vital to culture and society. That they belong in musicals! It’s rare and special to have an arts organization advocate vigorously for the kind of story that is given little space in mainstream and independent media.

Mydera Robinson has been the warmest, most wonderful creative nest in which to land. When you ask for her attention, the light shines on you alone. I’m inspired by her investment in community and the artists who come through the doors of Theatre Horizon.

I adore my collaborators Matthew Decker, Brenson Thomas, and Josh Totora. My feet are on the ground and my heart calm because of their insight, care, love, intellect, creativity, and cackles.

Thank you for going on the ride.

With much love, Amanda

THEATRE HORIZON

Founded in 2005 by Erin Reilly and Matthew Decker, in its 21 year history Theatre Horizon has grown from a summer producing venture into an award-winning, 123-seat professional company anchoring Norristown’s Arts Hill at 401 DeKalb Street. Our mission pairs compelling productions with education and community programs that make theatre a civic good for Montgomery County.
Theatre Horizon’s theatrical work has been repeatedly recognized by the Barrymore Awards, Philadelphia’s regional theatre honors, receiving 23 awards from 100 nominations.
We have also been a hub for new work, including the world premiere of White in 2017 by Pulitzer Prize Winner James Ijames; TOWN in 2023 created by Michael Garcas & Nell Bang-Jensen, and Amanda Morton’s Wishing to Grow Up Brightly in 2025 – the latter two supported by prestigious development grants from the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. In 2017, the American Theatre Wing—the organization that presents the Tony Awards—selected Theatre Horizon as one of just twelve U.S. recipients of its National Theatre Company Award, citing our distinctive mission and community of artists.
Theatre Horizon’s education pillar has served more than 11,500 students through four core
programs: Autism Drama Program, NSTEP (Norristown Supplemental Theatre Education
Partnerships), After-School Drama Clubs, and Summer Drama Camps—teaching theatre as a life skill and pathway to empathy. We reach 1,000+ young people each year.
Our Autism Drama Program—offered on a Pay-What-You-Can basis—supports imagination, communication, and social connection for children and adults on the spectrum; in 2019 it received the Victory Foundation Award for Outstanding Theatre Education Program. LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT

Penelope was rehearsed and performed at Theatre Horizon in Norristown, which stands on the territory known as “Lenapehoking,” the ancestral home of the Lenape people.

For the past 10,000 years, the Lenape have been the original caretakers and stewards of Lenapehoking—one of numerous tribes that comprised tens of millions of people residing on this continent prior to the invasion of European colonizers.

We recognize that Isaac Norris, Sr. — Norristown’s namesake — purchased land from the family of William Penn even though nobody “owns” Lenapehoking. We acknowledge that Isaac Norris, Sr. was a slaveholder who benefited from a system that captured, sold, and enslaved over 10 million Africans who were trafficked to various locations in North America, South America, and the Caribbean.

We acknowledge the 6 million African Americans that moved from the American South to the Northeast during The Great Migration and their roles in making places like Norristown a central hub for industry and retail. Finally, with a large Latinx population in Norristown—particularly people from Puerto Rico and Mexico—we acknowledge the past, present, and future legacies of the Taíno and Aztec peoples.

This land acknowledgement was written by Gilberto Vega with advisement from Adam Waterbear DePaul and Barbara Bluejay Michalski of the Lenape Cultural Center.
