Author’s Note

Like a lot of us, I spent large parts of 2020 in my apartment, thinking that theater probably didn’t exist anymore. A play script is a blueprint for a future event, and I simply could no longer imagine the future. When would we be able to invite audiences to see a show in person again? Would the things I was thinking about now still be relevant then? In a country going through a social and political upheaval, plus a pandemic, would theater still continue as it always had, or would it need to be reinvented?

This is the play that I wrote when I couldn’t imagine writing a play. I couldn’t imagine getting people together for rehearsals, so this play has no rehearsals. A different pair of actors go onstage every night and perform, never having read the script and only knowing the bare outlines of what they will be asked to do. If one of these actors tests positive for Covid, a different actor can go on in their place without changing anything about the performance. Because I was stuck in my apartment with my musician boyfriend, I made a show that needs only two major collaborators, a playwright and a sound designer/composer. The play is a machine created by the pandemic, solving for my logistical issues as if they were a math problem.

I found, in the idea of two performers with no idea what was about to happen, a way to talk about how I was feeling during the early days of lockdown. An actor ordinarily comes onstage with the security of knowing what will happen next. With this play, we see people learning what happens next in real time. In my two source texts, “Oedipus Rex” and “Sleepless in Seattle” – both about destiny, one with a happy ending, one tragic – I found a matched pair, two stories about what happens when a character finds out their fate at the beginning of the story, then watches it unfold. I feel a connection to everyone in history who has been drawn to stories about destiny. We all wish so much that there was some way of looking into the future, and that we could be sure that all of this is part of a larger plan. Instead, we experience our lives like the actors in this play, trying our best to make sense of everything as we go along.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT

Penelope was rehearsed and performed at Theatre Horizon in Norristown, which stands on the territory known as “Lenapehoking,” the ancestral home of the Lenape people.

For the past 10,000 years, the Lenape have been the original caretakers and stewards of Lenapehoking—one of numerous tribes that comprised tens of millions of people residing on this continent prior to the invasion of European colonizers.

We recognize that Isaac Norris, Sr. — Norristown’s namesake — purchased land from the family of William Penn even though nobody “owns” Lenapehoking. We acknowledge that Isaac Norris, Sr. was a slaveholder who benefited from a system that captured, sold, and enslaved over 10 million Africans who were trafficked to various locations in North America, South America, and the Caribbean.

We acknowledge the 6 million African Americans that moved from the American South to the Northeast during The Great Migration and their roles in making places like Norristown a central hub for industry and retail. Finally, with a large Latinx population in Norristown—particularly people from Puerto Rico and Mexico—we acknowledge the past, present, and future legacies of the Taíno and Aztec peoples.

This land acknowledgement was written by Gilberto Vega with advisement from Adam Waterbear DePaul and Barbara Bluejay Michalski of the Lenape Cultural Center.
