Directors’ Note
“So here is why I write what I do: We all have futures. We all have pasts. We all have stories. And we all, every single one of us, no matter who we are and no matter what’s been taken from us or what poison we’ve internalized or how hard we’ve had to work to expel it—we all get to dream.”
— N.K. Jemisin
PENELOPE began in the summer of 2020 as an album, conceived and composed by my dear friend Alex Bechtel. Forced to quarantine in separate cities from his romantic partner, he found himself writing pieces from the point of view of the waiting wife who lives in the margins of Homer’s ODYSSEY. Alex would send me demos and I had the great pleasure of offering thoughts and feedback, serving as a sort of informal dramaturg on the music.
In 2021, Alex and I teamed up with the brilliant and spectacular Grace McLean, and spent two years collaboratively transforming his album into this piece of live concert theater. The first page of our script reads, “No matter how theatrical the container of the piece becomes, it should always retain the feeling of a group of musicians playing an evening of songs for an audience. No matter what: The musicians exist in the space with Penelope, as does the audience. If this is a dream, it’s one we are all having together.”
Penelope is simultaneously the lead singer in a band and the main character in a play. She’s in her house and also on a stage. While she invites you to cast your mind back to an old and familiar classic, she does so on her terms, and insists that you see things from where she’s standing (which, turns out, is right here; right now). I cannot fully express what a profound joy and inspiration it has been, watching Rachel Camp bring this myth to life, and creating this world with her.
Whether you’re a longtime fangirl of Homer and his epics, you’ve read some Madeline Miller, or you have no idea what I’m talking about, I truly believe you have all the information you need to go on our musical journey with Penelope. Bring your grandma. Bring your daughter. Afterwards, ask them what images came to mind when the instrumental compositions filled the space. Share a piece of yourself you lost once.
In many ways, this show is a tribute to the things we miss and the lives we wait for –– to the wide horizons that fill our hearts with longing. It’s also about the journey of the everyday; the ways we grow and discover, even when we’re stuck in one place. As we continue to grapple with pain and fight for better futures, as we spend our lives learning the same lessons over and over again, we all have healing work to do.

Grace McLean (she/her) - BOOK WRITER
Called “electrifying” by The Huffington Post and “phenomenal” by The New York Times, Grace McLean is a multi-hyphenate actress-singer-writer-teacher. In addition to performing on Broadway (Suffs; Bad Cinderella; Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812) and Off (New Group, MCC, LCT3, Public, La MaMa, Vineyard, among others), Grace also makes time for her acclaimed original music. With an artistry that combines Regina Spektor’s quirkiness, Nellie McKay’s jazz sensibilities, Fiona Apple’s cutting introspection, Kimbra’s sass, and Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs’ rhythm, McLean adds up to one beautiful weirdo. Manhattan User’s Guide writes, “this pop and jazz singer writes seriously infectious melodies with seriously antic lyrics. Her voice can raise the roof, or she can slide off a note and break your heart,” and Stephen Holden of The New York Times says “Ms. McLean’s voice [is] a flexible instrument with unexpected reserves of power…Behind her playful adventurousness lies a well of passion.”
Grace’s first original musical, IN THE GREEN, was commissioned and produced by Lincoln Center Theater, and earned a Richard Rodgers Award for writing and a Lucille Lortel Award for her performance. She received a Vivace Award in 2023, a Jonathan Larson Grant in 2021, and is a Broadway Women’s Fund Woman to Watch. Grace is the 2017 recipient of the Hunt Family Emerging Artist Award through Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and her band headlined the Lincoln Center American Songbook in both 2015 and 2016. The band toured Pakistan as artistic ambassadors with the US State Department in 2015, and Grace traveled to Russia again with the State Department in 2018. She was a headlining performer and vocal instructor at the SingStrong a cappella festivals in DC and Chicago in 2014 and again in New York in 2020, and she continues to teach voice privately in New York.
Grace has taught classes at NYU, The New School, Northwestern, UNCC, Orange County School of the Arts, and New York Youth Symphony, among others. In New York, you can find her band at Joe’s Pub, 54 Below, Rockwood Music Hall, Ars Nova (where she developed the interactive concert experience Grace McLean: Lives in Concert), and the Museum of the American Indian, where they performed as part of a panel discussion on storytelling for The Economist’s 2012 Ideas Summit. As a solo-performer, Grace has been seen at Lincoln Center, New York City Center, The McKittrick, BAM, the ACE Hotel (where she collaborates with The Dance Cartel’s show OnTheFloor), and numerous other venues both uptown and downtown. She is also a frequent contributor to Obie-winning investigative theater company The Civilians’ cabaret series Let Me Ascertain You.
McLean has developed work at SPACE on Ryder Farm, The Orchard Project, The O’Neill, Johnny Mercer Writers’ Colony at Goodspeed, The PiTCH, CAP21, The Civilians R&D Group, and MacDowell. The original cast recording for IN THE GREEN is available on Ghostlight Records. LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
Penelope was rehearsed and performed at Theatre Horizon in Norristown, which stands on the territory known as “Lenapehoking,” the ancestral home of the Lenape people.
For the past 10,000 years, the Lenape have been the original caretakers and stewards of Lenapehoking—one of numerous tribes that comprised tens of millions of people residing on this continent prior to the invasion of European colonizers.
We recognize that Isaac Norris, Sr. — Norristown’s namesake — purchased land from the family of William Penn even though nobody “owns” Lenapehoking. We acknowledge that Isaac Norris, Sr. was a slaveholder who benefited from a system that captured, sold, and enslaved over 10 million Africans who were trafficked to various locations in North America, South America, and the Caribbean.
We acknowledge the 6 million African Americans that moved from the American South to the Northeast during The Great Migration and their roles in making places like Norristown a central hub for industry and retail. Finally, with a large Latinx population in Norristown—particularly people from Puerto Rico and Mexico—we acknowledge the past, present, and future legacies of the Taíno and Aztec peoples.

SMALL BALL
An Off-beat Musical
Book and Lyrics by Mickle Maher
Music by Merel van Dijk and Anthony Barilla
directed by Taibi Magar & Tyler Dobrowsky
Commissioned and Co-Produced by Philadelphia 76ers President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey
directed by Taibi Magar & Tyler Dobrowsky
June 6 – 29, 2025
Philadelphia loves sports, so why not a sports-themed musical? Step into the surreal, magical world of Small Ball, where melancholy journeyman basketball player Michael Jordan (no, not that Michael Jordan) has recently started playing in the international league with the Lilliput Existers – as in Lilliput, from Gulliver’s Travels. With teammates who are only six inches tall, the team’s fortunes, and the post-game press conferences, rest on Michael’s shoulders.
Archduke
by Rajiv Joseph
directed by Blanka Zizka
STREAMING: May 8 – June 1, 2025
Three boys – Gavrilo Princip, Trifko Grabež, and Nedeljko Čabrinović – are recruited by a mysterious organization with promises of glory, purpose, and a sandwich. Their depraved Captain sends the boys on a mission he claims will restore order and justice to their struggling nation and avenge the unfairness of their terminal illness. Their assignment? Assassinate the heir to the Austro-Hungarian empire, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and his wife, Sophie. Beloved playwright Rajiv Joseph (Describe the Night) returns to the Wilma with a play that asks, what happens when a person feels like they have nothing left to lose? What methods are acceptable in the fight against oppression? Led by the Wilma’s visionary Founding Artistic Director Blanka Zizka (Heroes of the Fourth Turning, Kill Move Paradise), and featuring the HotHouse Acting Company, Archduke offers audiences a humanized glimpse into the catalyst of WWI.
